This study examines the research on agriculture in the Middle and Modern ages centering around philological history from the aspects of archaeology based on archaeological materials (or material data). To attain the goal, this paper arranges the current status of cultivation remains and relics from the Middle and Modern ages first and then studies briefly the flow of agriculture in the Middle and Modern ages through detailed attribute analysis. Also, based on that, this research studies the ‘farmland use’ which is the chief issue of Korean agricultural history from the aspects of Archaeology, and it investigates the applicability of archaeological examination regarding Hyuhan method and Yeonjak method (Sanggyeong method). However, only with the current Archaeological research cases or research results, it is difficult to make a concrete approach to the philological historic data. Therefore, it is needed to activate the research cases on the cultivation remains from the Middle and Modern ages. Furthermore, it is necessary to apply the analysis methods of natural science more positively.
Archaeological approaches to research into agriculture in the Middle and Modern ages are at the point to take its first step now so lack in many ways. However, along with the changes of recognition on the cultivation remains from the Middle and Modern ages, if complementary research is more actively conducted in cooperation with philological history, it is possible to gure out more concrete aspects of farming techniques, and along with that, research on agriculture in the Middle and Modern ages will be conducted from more diverse viewpoints.

본 연구는 문헌사학 중심으로 이루어지고 있는 중·근세 농업연구를 고고자료(물질자료)를 통한 고고학적 관점에서 검토한 것이다. 먼저 중·근세 경작유적과 유구에 대한 현황을 정리하고, 이에 대한 세부적인 속성분석을 통해 중·근세 농업의 흐름을 대략적으로 살펴보았다. 또한 이를 바탕으로 한국농업사의 주요쟁점인 ‘경지이용방식(휴한법과 연작법)’에 대해 고고학적인 관점에서 검토하였다. 하지만 현재의 고고학적 조사사례나 연구성과 만으로는 문헌사료에 대한 구체적인 접근에 어려움이 있다. 따라서 이를 위해서는 중·근세 경작유적에 대한 조사사례가 활성화 되어야 하며, 이와 더불어 새로운 조사방법 및 자연과학적 분석 등도 적극적으로 도입되어야 한다. 중·근세 농업연구의 고고학적 접근은 현재 첫 걸음을 내딛는 시점으로 부족한 점이 많지만, 중·근세 경작유구에 대한 인식전환과 함께 문헌사학과의 보다 적극적인 상호보완적인 연구가 이루어진다면, 농사기술에 대한 보다 구체적인 양상을 파악할 수 있으며, 이와 함께 다양한 관점에서 중·근세 농업연구가 이루어질 것으로 기대한다.
