This writing is aimed at looking at the distribution process of ironwork, charcoal and iron ore centering on charcoal kiln investigated at Chungju District. Charcoal kiln, as the one having the function of the side window for extracting charcoal, is also called pipe-shape charcoal kiln and side-guttertype kiln which was built concentrically at Ieryu-myon, Shinni-myon, and Noeun-myon of Judeok-eup, Chungju-si. Charcoal kiln is mostly located at the hillside and it is judged that people chose its building direction according to topography and the wind strength. Its structure is divided into the combustor, firing section, stack, smoke-hole, side window for extracting charcoal, lateral[front] workings, and mostly oak family was used.
This writing classified the forms of charcoal kiln on the basis of the combustor, firing section, and smoke-hole; as a result, it was found that patternⅠof the combustor, pattern b of the firing section and pattern b of the stack were used the most on the whole. In addition, the period for the charcoal kiln investigated at Chungju district is judged to be built mostly from the divided into stages.
Lastly, this researcher took a look at the distribution process of ironworking remains, steel products, charcoal, and iron ore centering on the charcoal kiln. in Chungju district and this researcher was also able to discover the distribution process of the produced steel products, charcoal, and iron ore from Chungju to the center of Baekje Hanseong and inland area of Chungcheong-do using the Namhan river and inland traffic routes. This research thinks that Chungju district is important in looking at the cultural aspects at that time in that a large scale of charcoal kilns were identied at its neighbouring area by virtue of its geological characteristics like the Namhan river and abundant reserve of iron ore. In addition, considering the iron ore and good quality charcoal from this area, it is judged that there might be a cluster equipped with a large scale of facilities in its center, so Chungju district is highly likely to be the very place.
As a result of looking at the charcoal kiln like above, it is most likely that there might be a trade or act of physical distribution between Chungju district and the body politic of Mahan far before the infuence of Baekje Hanseong, and it is judged that there might arise the process of production, distribution, and circulation under the more systematic management in the period of Baehje Hanseong

이 글에서는 충주지역에서 조사된 피리형가마를 중심으로 철제품, 목탄, 철광석의 유통과정을 살펴보고자 하였다. 피리형가마는 측구를 가진 窯로서 측구부탄요로 불리기도하며 충주시 주덕읍 이류면, 신니면, 노은면에서 집중적으로 조사되었다. 입지는 대체로 고지대에 위치해 있어, 지형 및 바람세기에 따라 장축방향을 선택한 것으로 판단된다. 구조는 연소부와 소성부·연도부·배연부·측구·측면(전면)작업장 등으로 구성되며, 주로 참나무류를 탄화하였다. 연소부, 소성부, 연도부를 기준으로 형식분류한 결과 연소부 Ⅰ유형, 소성부 b유형, 연도부 나유형이 대체로 많이 축조되었다. 충주지역에서 조사된 피리형가마는 고고지자기연대 및 탄소연대 분석결과로 볼 때 크게 두 단계 정도로 구분된다.
충주지역 역사적 변천 및 제철유적과 철제품, 목탄, 철광석의 유통과정을 살펴보았다. 역사적 변천은 4단계로 구분되었다. 생산된 철제품과 목탄·철광석은 남한강과 내륙 교통로를 이용하여 한성기 백제 중앙과 충청내륙지역으로 유통되는 과정을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 충주지역은 남한강이라는 지리적 특수성과 풍부한 철광석으로 인해 주변에 피리형가마가 대규모로 축조되었으며, 이를 통한 주변과의 물류 유통 및 집단의 성격을 파악할 수 있는 중요한 지역으로 생각된다. 또한 철광석과 양질의 목탄 생산 등을 고려하면 이 지역 중심에 대규모의 시설을 갖춘 집단이 형성되었을 것으로 판단되며, 이는 충주지역일 가능성이 높다.
이상과 같은 제양상들을 통하여 충주지역은 한성기 백제 중앙의 영향권에 들어오기 이전부터 마한의 정치체와 교역 또는 유통이 이루어졌을 가능성이 높으며, 백제 한성기에는 좀 더 체계적으로 관리되어 생산, 유통이 이루어졌을 것으로 판단된다.
