Articles from southern China and the West were excavated in addition to articles from Goguryeo, Baekje, Gaya and Japan in tombs of the Silla Dynasty. Although the Silla Dynasty initially maintained close relationship with the Goguryeo Dynasty while it was building large-scaled Jeokseok mokgwakbun(Stone-Surrounded wooden chamber type of tombs) in Gyeongju, it also tried to improve relationships with Baekje, Gaya and Japan. In addition, it exchanged with various dynasties in China through Goguryeo and Baekje. It is understood that articles from various countries were introduced into the Silla Dynasty and were buried in the tombs.
Studies on foreign civilization in tombs of the Silla Dynasty are still insufficient, but it is important because it can show dynamic international exchange which are not found in literature. This is why such studies are necessary in the future. In particular, the current study suggested that it is high time to make efforts to objectively understand remains in the tombs by broadening the range of studies while being faithful to arrangement of more basic materials because extreme interpretation like ‘East Romans Movement Theory’ suggested while interpreting articles from the countries to the west of China.

신라고분 속에서는 고구려, 백제, 가야, 왜의 물품뿐만 아니라 중국 남조와 멀리 서역으로부터 전해진 물품이 출토되었다. 경주시내에 대규모의 적석목곽분을 축조하던 시기의 신라는 1차적으로 고구려와 밀접한 관계를 유지하였으나 다른 한편으로 백제-가야-왜와의 관계 개선에도 노력하였다. 또한 고구려나 백제를 매개로 하여 중국 여러 왕조와도 통교하였다. 그런 와중에서 여러 나라의 물품이 신라의 왕도에 전해져 무덤 속에 부장된 것으로 이해된다.
신라고분 속 외래유물에 대한 연구는 아직 부족한 편이지만, 문헌기록에서 볼 수 없는 다이내믹한 국제교류의 모습을 실체적으로 보여줄 수 있다는 점에서 중요하며 그것은 향후 연구의 진전이 필요한 이유이기도 하다. 특히 서역계 문물을 해석하면서 제기된 ‘동로마인 이동설’의 경우처럼 극단적인 해석도 제기되고 있으므로 보다 기초적인 자료의 정리에 충실을 기하는 한편 연구의 시야를 넓어 고분 속 유물을 객관적으로 이해하기 위한 노력이 절실한 시점임을 제언하여 보았다.
