Photo-sensitive microspheres were prepared by gelatin cinnamic acid conjugation (GCC) by emulsion method. Cinnamic acid, which is usually used as photo-sensitive material because its double bond is readily dimerized and de-dimerized under the cyclic irradiation of UV light (365nm and 254 nm), was conjugated to alginate due to the amidation between the carboxy group of cinnamic acid and the amine group of gelatin. Firstly, GCC was dissolved in distilled water then adding mineral oil to prepare W/O emulsion. After adding glutaraldehyde as a crosslinker, the gel was formed, then it was filtrating and washing with acetone to get rid of mineral oil, we can obtain the microsperes. As shown in the microscope photograph and SEM, the microspheres were spherical shaped and the mean size were about 100nm. The dimerization degree of GCC was investigated by treating with cycle of UV irradiation at λ=365 nm and λ=254 nm. The release of nile red, used as a model of hydrophobic drug being loaded in the microsperes, was around 70% in 3hr according to our study.
