Anti-inflammatory Cosmeceutical Efficacy of Ecklonia cava Extracted by Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

원문정보

초록

영어

Ecklonia cava is a specific species of brown algae found off the coasts of Jeju island Korea. Ecklonia cava contains polyphenols that are very unique, are not found in land based plants, and are quite possibly the most powerful antioxidants found in nature, approximately 10 to 100 times more powerful than other polyphenols. Ecklonia cava’s polyphenols called phlorotannins, are a type of tannins found in brown algae and are oligomers of phloroglucinol. In traditional extract method(extract by water or alcohol), Ecklonia cava extracts have low phlorotannin contents and unpleasant odor. So this Study, phlorotannins was extracted from Ecklonia cava via supercritical CO2. The effect of extract was measured antioxidant activity (DPPH scavenging assay) and anti—inflammation activity (NO assay, in-vivo inflammation assay). According to the results, supercritical CO2 extract was more active both tests comparing the traditional extraction methods. The higher activity was demonstrated in the HPLC analysis, supercritical CO2 extract harbored elevated amounts of phlorotannins.
