This paper focuses on the extended stone coffin in Sangju region. Extended stone coffin means the stone coffin which was cut the mound off and made an extension to both long walls. This type of stone coffin has been discovered only in Byungsung-dong site, Hensin-dong site and Seungdong-li site in Sangju region. But there are very few studies on the extended stone coffin until now because the extended stone coffin was considered just as one of varation of the horizontal entrance style stone coffin and it was understood merely as a supplemented burial practice. As a result, very little attention was paid to this stone coffin style.
We tried to bring light to people who used this burial style and to determine its time span. Analysis shows that multi-chamber burials relatively prevailed over this region and the extended stone coffin would be related to the aides of chief rulers in Seungdong-li, Sangju Region. We tried to make a relative chronology of sites on the basis of materials and the comparison with absolute chronology of Kyungju region and it proved that the emergence of extended stone coffin in Sangju Region would be around the 6th century.

본고는 상주지역에서 나타난 증축석곽묘에 대한 글이다1). 증축석곽묘란 기존에 조성된 석곽묘의 봉토를 절개한 후 석곽묘의 양장벽을 더 연장하여 증축한 석곽묘를 말한다. 이러한 석곽묘는 상주 병성동·헌신동·성동리 일원에서만 확인되었다. 하지만 이 증축석곽묘에 대해서는 연구가 거의 전무한 상태였다. 이러한 이유는 증축석곽묘가 거의 횡구식석곽묘의 형태로 확인되었기 때문에 횡구식석곽묘의 매장관습인 추가장을 할 때 나타나는 현상으로만 가볍게 여겼기 때문으로 이해된다.
이러한 이유로 증축석곽묘에 대해 분석하여 증축석곽묘라는 고고학적 자료를 남긴 사람들과 그 시간적 범위를 살펴보았다. 분석결과 다곽식묘가 상대적으로 우월한 위치를 점하고 있었고, 증축석곽묘의 피장자들은 당시 상주 성동리 일원의 최고지배자의 주변인으로 추정하였다. 이후 증축석곽묘에서 출토된 유물을 순서배열법으로 배열하여 각 유구의 상대편년을 시도하였고, 경주지역의 절대연대 자료와 비교 검토하여 증축석곽묘가 상주지역에 조영되기 시작한 시기는 6세기 전반대로 비정하였다.
