Butanol, a primary alcohol with 4 carbons, is a valuable chemical that be utilized as a transport fuel, solvent, and intermediate of chemical synthesis. In this study, the effects of electron mediators on butanol production were evaluated through the microbial growth and VFAs production. As a butanol producer, C. beijerinckii NCIMB 8052 was selected and cultivated in anaerobic condition with modified P2 medium containing methyl viologen (MV), neutral red (NR), anthraquinone- 1,5-disulfonic acid (1,5-AQDS), or disodium anthraquinone-2,6- disulfonate(2,6-AQDS) as an electron mediator, respectively. Each of electron mediator concentration was 0.01 mM, 0.05 mM, or 0.1 mM of MV, NR and 1.0 mM, 3.0 mM, or 5.0 mM of 1,5-AQDS and 2,6-AQDS. Various cell growths and VFAs production depending on electron mediators were shown. The cell growth of C. beijerinckii NCIMB 8052 was not mostly changed, but inhibited by 5.0 mM of 1,5-AQDS and 2,6-AQDS, and 0.01 mM of NR. The production of n-butanol was increased 1.56 times in 0.1 mM of MV, 1.10 times in 3.0 mM of 2,6-AQDS, and 1.12 times in 3.0 mM of 1,5-AQDS. It seems that the electron mediators could affect the cell growth as well as the metabolites production of C. beijerinckii NCIMB 8052.
