In a Kraft pulping process, lignin and part of hemicellulose is dissolved and burned in the recovery boiler, again making steam and electricity. The hemicellulose is burned in the black liquor in the process, but is contributes less to the fuel value than does lignin. Pre-extraction of the hemicellulose sugars in front of the pulping operation provides new biofuels opportunities but may also change the operation of the recovery boilers. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of different pre-extraction techniques on the two types of raw material, oak chips and pine chips of softwood. The extractions were performed at the different H-factor ranged from 500 to 1100 to determine the effect of extraction severity on composition of the extracted liquor. The severity of hemicellulose extraction controls the concentration of acetic acid and monosaccharide sugars available for downstream processing, the accumulation of decomposition products such as organic acids and furans in the extract.
