PFOS is a very stable compound and has been used in a variety of industries, such as coatings, chemical process. Emissions on the ecosystem when the long period of stay is not easily decomposed. So it is persistent in environment and in a living system for long period of time, causing serious adverse effect in human health as well as into the ecosystem. In this study, Pseudomonas aeruginosa HJ4 was isolated from activated sludge and showed its ability to grow on PFOS as the sole carbon and energy source. Moreover, P. aeruginosa HJ4 show the activity of biodegradation of PFOS in the batch culture. HJ4 showed high efficiency of biodegradation of PFOS with the optimum conditions (pH 7.0, temperature of 35℃ and PFOS concentration of 600mg/kg) from the batch culture. The maximum degradation rate under the optimum conditions was degraded about 60% within 12hrs. Conclusively, P. areruginosa HJ4 was able to degrade a concentration of 600 mg/kg PFOS.
