As One of the pretreatment process, the dilute acid pretreatment enhances enzymatic digestibility of the biomass by dissolving hemicellulose fraction of the biomass as soluble oligo- and monosaccharides, while degradation of monomeric sugar products such as HMF (5-hydroxymethyl furfural) and furfural, which are known to inhibit bacteria or yeast in the ethanol fermentation process. In this paper, we investigated the effect of dilute acid pretreatment for Empty fruit bunch(EFB) over various reaction conditions using percolation process. For the improvement of enzymatic digestibility, Two step pretreatments were carried out for the xylose was recovered as pretreated liquid and for the increasing yield of enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated solid and to produce less waste water in dilute acid. For the two step dilute acid pretreatment, the biomass was heated to open the sugar structure in the first batch step. After second flow-through step, xylooligomer and xylose was recovered as a liquid. After the HLW and dilute acid pretreatment, pretreated liquid containing xylooligomer and xylose was used in enzymatic hydrolysis with pretreated solid. Thus, glucose yield of 83% and xylose yield of 52% (initial sugar basis) were obtained from enzymatic hydrolysis.
