Growth-promoting effects of exhausted coffees on wheat sprout

원문정보

초록

영어

Wheat sprout (Triticum aestivum), one of the most noticeable vegetables, has been well known for its biological activities such as antioxidation. Exhausted coffees or spent coffee grounds which are waste products from the coffee industry have been incessantly researched for their reutilization in many different fields. In this study, exhausted coffees were added to the commercial bed soil and analyzed for their effects on the growth and physiological activity of the sprout of Triticum aestivum. It was clearly demonstrated that exhausted coffees could promote the growth of wheat sprout. The culture soils added with 40% and 60% exhausted coffees were very notable by showing 20% higher in dry plant weight and length compared with the control one, which suggested exhausted coffees as a promoter for the growth of the wheat sprout. Interestingly, chlorophyll content in sprouts was also increased with the addition of exhausted coffees.
