In this study, antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of Spergularia marina Griseb were investigated using its ethanol extract. This study was performed to evaluate antibacterial substances from a salt tolerant plant S. marina and to elucidate the antibacterial mechanism against gram negative and gram positive bacteria. The antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract of S. marina was examined by the paper-disk diffusion assay. Ethanol extract of S. marina was significantly inhibited bacteria growth such as L. monocytogens, B. subtilis, S. aureus and R. equi in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, it showed antioxidant effect such as DPPH radical scavenging and inhibition of intracellular ROS formation in RAW 264.7 cells. Also, the ethanol extract of S. marina showed a high level of polyphenolic contents. The polyphenolic components might be related to the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. Therefore, these results suggest that ethanol extract of S. marina is an attractive strategy for developing functional food ingredients.
