A previous study has shown that the Bacillus subtilis 168 transformant harboring a vector containing the gabT1 (transaminase), yktc1 (phosphatase), and gutB1 (oxidoreductase) genes of B. subtilis MORI acquired the ability to produce 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ). In the present study, we analyzed the transcriptome profiles of DNJ producing recombinant B. subtilis 168 strains in comparison to the control strain. The expressions of about 230 genes in DNJ production strain were either up- or down-regulated more than 2-fold compared to those in control strain. Of these, 160 genes were up-regulated and 70 genes were down-regulated. Most of the up-regulated genes are involved in dehydrogenase, hydrolase, ligase, oxidoreductase, transferase, and transporter activities, whereas the down-regulated genes are involved in transferase and transporter activities. Our result suggested that microarray analysis will provide useful information to understand the DNJ biosynthetic pathways and to optimize DNJ biosynthesis in recombinant B. subtilis.
