Production of Lactic Acid from Arabic Date Juice by Fed-batch Fermentation of Lactobacillus rhamnosus

초록

영어

Poly(lactic acid) synthesized by polymerization of lactic acid is considered as an alternate plastic material. Thus, producing lactic acid from inexpensive biomass has been studied by many. Arabic date is abundant and inexpensive biomass that contains high level of sugar which can be used by bacteria without pretreatments. Various bioprocesses such as fed-batch fermentation should be explored for industrial application of lactic acid production. Fed-batch fermentation especially is powerful tool to achieve high concentration of product because it can avoid substrate inhibition which is one of the main problems of batch fermentation. In this study, various fermentations including pulse feeding fed-batch, step-wise feeding fed-batch, and exponential feeding fed-batch fermentations on Arabic date juice were carried out. Exponential feeding schedule was built based on batch fermentation data.
