Succinate received great attention as a promising C-4 platform chemical. Economically viable bio-based succinate production acquires a succinate producer with industrial-level yield and productivity but low byproducts. The three main factors in the whole succinate-producing process were considered simultaneously. One is the development of strain having enhanced productivity and yield to cut down the operation cost in the fermentation process. Another is the elimination of all the byproducts to minimize the separation and purification costs. The other is the reduction of the raw material cost by efficiently utilizing cost-effective carbon sources being selected for the enhancement of the productivity and yield. This multi-stage and multi-omics strategy to develop high-performance succinic acid producers revealed here how systems metabolic engineering can affect to the whole bioprocesses.
