In this study we investigated the potential probiotic properties and antimicrobial activity of a novel strain isolated from Kimchi. The analysis based on morphological, physiological as well as biochemical characteristics indicate that this strain belongs to the genus Lactobacillus sp. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the strain K38 was a member of the Lactobacillus sakei group as nearest neighbours and most closely related to Lactobacillus graminis DSM 20719 (98.57%). The strain showed prolonged survival in synthetic stomach juice (pH 2.5) and good growth in MRS media containing 0.5% bile. In addition, the strain K38 showed broad spectrum against various pathogens causing human and animal diseases, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa KCTC1637, Escherichia coli KCTC2441T, Salmonella enterica subsp.enterica KCTC2514T, and Proteus mirabilis KCTC2566T.
