Saccharification of alginate using alginate lyase and its application to bioethanol and biopolymer production

Brown seaweed is considered as one of the promising renewable biomass for the production of biopolymers and biofuels (1). Alginate is the main structural polysaccharide in brown seaweed and constitutes up to 40-50% of its biomass (2-3). In order to use alginate for the production of biopolymers and biofuels, various endolytic and exolytic alginate lyase-catalyzed saccharification of alginate was investigated. Biopolymers and biofules were prepared from the resulting uronate monosaccharide using a recombinant Escherichia coli harboring relevant metabolic genes.
