Korean Journal of Linguistics, 38-1, 141-172. Patterns of sound perceptions have long been known to exhibit properties of the native language, linguistic experience and universal linguistic knowledge. The goal of this research is to examine how Korean and Chinese listeners differently perceive unfamiliar segments and illicit consonant clusters over a syllable boundary and to see what factor most influences their perceptions and how they interact. For the goals, selected were two groups of Koreans who took a phonetics/phonology course. They took pre- and posttest, and the results were analyzed with respect to the interrelationship and were also compared with those of Chinese. With regard to perceptions of the individual segments by Korean listeners, perception of fricatives recorded lowest, which means the mother tongue plays an important role. At the same time, given that the class taught in English shows a sensible improvement, we contend that language experience also plays a vital role. When a segment sequence satisfies both phonology of the mother tongue and the universal knowledge, the perception rates marked highest, while a segment sequence violates both of them, the perception rates marked lowest. Most importantly, when the universal knowledge and mother tongue conflict, the mother tongue plays a more important role than the universal knowledge. (Yeungnam University)
