Ahmatjan Osman and Parhat Tursun have been the leading figures of Uyghur modernist poetry since the 1990's. Their poems can be interpreted as the symptom of recent drift swirling in Uyghur society. With the gloomy literary atmosphere of 'fin de siecle' hallmark featured a century ago, they share presentiment of crisis, sluggishness, cynicism and pessimism, and resistance against the decadence of civilization to be incarnated as a pursuit of new alternative modernity. The decadent impetus thrust upon Uyghur society was fostered by the Western Development Project, which led the overall turmoil in Xinjiang. The dismantling of the Soviet Union entailed a huge vacuum of power in Central Asia, of which China took its advantage. China grasped the hegemonic influence over Central Asian Muslim states urging them to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which drove Uyghurs to get isolated from its neighbouring Muslim relative countries over its borderland. With the beginning of 21st century, taking hold of Xinjiang in its firm hands, China propelled its harsh assimilationist policy onto Uyghur through imposing market system on every domain of Uyghur life, enlarging immigration of Han ethnic people in whole Xinjiang area, suppressing religious practice and usage of Uyghur language in a ruthless way. Another catastrophic event was 9.11. It justified the demonization of Muslim and gave a disastrous trauma on the self-confidence of Uyghur people's mind, devastating the spiritual ground of resistance movement. Relative Muslim states across the borderland turned their faces away from Uyghurs behind the flag of 'war against terrorism' initiated by America and China. Poems of Ahmatjan Osman and Parhat Tursun have not been successful in finding an answer to cope with the overall crisis of national identity in this tragic decade of the 21st century, which is followed by the bewildering disorder of modernity and post-modernity. Two poets have been weaving the shivering metaphors forecasted upon the Uyghur's gloomy future, continuously suffering from despair and self-disruption.
