Pingjiang Buxiaosheng(pen name of Xiang Kairan, 1890-19570)'s Jindai Xiayi Yingxiong Zhuan (The Stories of Modern Chivalrous Heroes, 1923) which addresses local legends with a saga of chivalrous fighters and heroes such as Huo Yuanjia and Wang Wu in late Qing, has been widely conceived as the Bible of knight-errant novels in the republic era in China. Despite the high recognition, there has been little research investigating the specific causes of such evaluations of the work. In this context, this study illustrates the characteristics of the Jindai Xiayi Yingxiong Zhuan which differentiate it from other narratives of knight-errant, and through the examination of the work’s distinctive characteristics (i.e., highlighting the Chinese martial arts and usage of national confrontations), the study points out that the novel has marked the beginning of new phase in the field of narratives knight-errant by its introduction of the conceptual idea of nation-states.
