Theological studies are a work of “a continual reappraisal of our past, in order that we my better understand the present, and have a secure hope for the future.” If we are not reinterpreting, as Lawrence Stookey mentioned, the we are not growing; and when we do not grow, we frustrate the grace of God. Reappraisal of our past is trial to find the original meaning and essence and the process used to provide orthopraxis to the church and Christians. Christian worship and sacraments have formed and developed by its reappraisal and reinterpretation. Liturgy shapes us and we shape the church community and tradition. The study of Christian worship can lost its right direction without the kind of reappraisal of origin, history, development, and practice of Christian worship. Searching the process of formation of the sacramental doctrine in the early church, in particular, AD 1-5 centuries, this article is a kind of reappraisal on connection between the issue of sacramental validity and moral issues and spirituality of church leaders like bishop and the Christians who became an apostate in the early church. This article focused on the reappraisal of the sacramental controversies and on the reinterpretation of the process for the practice of sacraments in the contemporary church.

신학은 끊임없는 “재해석의 작업”이다. 우리가 그 작업을 온전히 수행하기 않게 되면 성장하지 못하게 되고, 그렇게 되면 우리는 하나님의 은혜를 헛되게 할 수 있다. 재해석의 작업은 그 본래의 의미와 본질을 되찾는 작업이며, 그것이 바로 될 때만 기독교 신앙과 신앙행위는 바른 의미를 찾게 되며 바른 실행을 수행할 수 있다. 그런 점에서 보면 예배와 성례는 본질적으로 이런 재해석의 작업을 필요로 한다. 기독교의 예배와 성례는 오랜 기간 이런 재해석과 재평가를 통해 형성되고 발전되어 왔다. 그러므로 역사의 굴곡마다에서 실행(practice)와 의미(meaning)에 대해 지속적인 연구와 검토가 이루어졌다. 기독교 예전 연구는 그 기원, 역사, 발전, 실행에 대해 그러한 검토가 없이는 그 방향성과 진정성을 상실할 수 있게 된다. 예전은 우리를 형성하고, 우리는 교회를 형성한다. 기독교의 예배의 신학과 실행은 과거와 단절될 수 없으며, 오늘 우리가 실행하고 있는 것에 대해 깊이 주목함으로써의 경험되는 것이요, 세워나가는 것이다. 본고는 초기의 예배와 성례 형성 과정을 간단하게 살펴보면서 1-5세기에 성례를 중심으로 한 교리논쟁에는 성례의 유효성에 대해서 뿐만 아니라 예배자와 사역자의 덕성과 영성의 문제와 깊인 연결되어 있음을 발견하면서 그 배후에 담긴 예배자의 삶의 문제, 사역자의 건덕과 윤리의 중요성과 깊이 연관되어 있음을 밝히는 일종의 재해석의 작업이다. 바른 교리를 찾아가면서 잃어버린 것은 무엇이며, 예배와 성례의 실행에서 바른 것이 무엇인지를 새롭게 모색하게 되는 당위성 앞에 서 있게 된다. 그런 점에서 초기 교회가 경험했던 예배와 성례와 관련된 문헌과 주요 논쟁들을 살펴보면서 내러티브적 배경과 논쟁의 쟁점과 성례와 관련하여 고려되었어야 할 사항들을 살펴보고, 오늘의 예배 성례 형성과 실행에 끼친 영향을 예배의 역사에 대한 ‘재해석’이라는 관점에서 살펴보면서 오늘의 예배와 성례 현장에 그러한 논쟁이 제시하는 긍정적, 부정적 영향을 평가하는데 있다.
