The purpose of this study is to analyze the opinions on the internet of the London riots and to suggest the direction of multicultural education in Korea. For this purpose, this paper, firstly, reviews cases of ethnic conflict in multicultural nations, specifically the characteristics of the London riots in 2011. Second, this paper attempts to analyze opinions of koreans on the internet about the London riots, and to suggest the direction for the new multicultural education in Korea. According to the results of the analysis, multicultural consciousness appeared on internet in relation to the London riots is very negative, contrary to different survey results. People more than 50% show negative thinking about multicultural society. And most of people tend to think that multicultural conflicts are associated with the socio-economic problems. Meanwhile, some people recognize that multicultural conflicts are related to poverty culture. Particularly, most people think immigrant labour negatively as competitors of korean labour in the debate. On the basis of these results, multicultural education should be necessary to include the contents of immigrant labor as well as of international marriage family. In addition this, multicultural education needs to include debate-based education on the issues of the value and knowledge embedded in multicultural phenomenon that reflect reality of korean society.

현대사회에서 다문화사회의 인종 간 갈등은 증대하고, 한국은 매우 빠르게 다문화사회로 변화하고 있다. 그래서 본 연구는 2011년 8월에 일어난 런던폭동에 대한 인터넷에서의 논의들을 중심으로 한국인의 다문화사회에 대한 의식을 분석하고, 이를 바탕으로 다문화교육의 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 런던폭동과 관련하여 인터넷에 나타난 한국인의 다문화에 대한 의식은 매우 부정적이다. 다문화 의식에 대한 다른 조사들과는 달리 의견 제시자의 절반이 넘는 사람들이 다문화사회에 대해 반대하는 의견을 제시하고 있다. 그리고 대부분의 사람들은 다문화사회의 갈등을 그 사회의 사회·경제적 차별 문제들과 연관시켜 인식하고 있다. 특히 한국의 다문화사회에 대한 토론에서는 대부분의 사람들이 이주노동자를 일반 노동자들과 경제적 경쟁자로 인식하고 이들에 대해 부정적인 태도를 보이고 있다. 이러한 점들을 고려할 때 현재 한국의 다문화교육은 국제결혼자의 다문화가정 중심에서 이주노동자와 그들의 가정을 포함한 다문화교육으로 확대되어야 한다. 그리고 다문화교육은 현실적 기반에 기초한 상호이해적 방법을 통해 사회통합과 세계시민교육을 지향하는 목표를 명확히 하고, 다문화사회의 갈등 현황과 원인들의 이해를 위한 지식교육과 다문화사회의 갈등 해결을 위한 토론교육을 포함해야 할 것이다.
