The purpose of this study is clarifying the Wuxing’s feature of the characters in and examining the characters’ coexisting or conflicting relationship in order to finding out the deep meaning in the outer structure of the Wuxing’s Principle. It is the base to analyze using the Wuxing’s Principle that there are lots of points related to Wuxing in Chunhyangjeon. The conflict between Sung Chunhyang and Byun Hakdo caused by her refuse to give her bed service to him is the main conflict in Chunhyangjeon. It is the main plot that she settles the problem with the help of Lee Mongryong. According to the result of analyzing characters as Wuxing’s Principle, Sung Chunhyang is tree, Lee Mongryong is water, Byun Hakdo is fire, the King is metal. The deep meaning of susangmok is that is the reflection of people’s expectation to appear ideal officer, so, loyal who enlighten the people, work for them and share with them. The deep meaning of keungsangsoo is that the officer of susangmok is true to the king and king helps this loyal officer. It can be said that symbolize the ideal of the rule with justice This research will has its significance in that it finds new possibility to analyze the character’s win-win and incompatible relationship in the Korean classical novel text through the Wuxing’s Principle.

이 연구의 목적은 <열녀춘향수절가> 인물의 오행적 속성을 밝히고 등장 인물간의 상생관계와 상극관계를 규명하여, 오행적 원리에 내재된 심층적 의 미를 밝히고자 하였다. 춘향전 작품 안에 오행과 관련된 요소들이 많이 등장 하는 것은 <열녀춘향수절가>를 오행의 원리로 분석할 수 있는 근거가 된다. 춘향전에서 성춘향은 바르게 살아가는 힘없는 백성, 이몽룡은 임금의 명 령을 충실히 수행하는 이상적인 관리, 변학도는 백성을 수탈하는 부정적인 역신에 비유될 수 있다. 등장하는 인물들을 오행의 원리로 분석한 결과 성 춘향은 木이며, 이몽룡은 水이고, 임금은 金이며, 변학도는 火이다. 춘향전은 이 네 인물의 오행의 상호작용에 따라 수생목, 금생수, 목생화의 상생관계 와 수극화, 화극금, 금극목의 상극관계에 따라 사건이 전개된다. 그러므로 춘향전은 인물의 오행적 속성에 따라 상생과 상극이 서로 순행과 역행의 상호작용을 하면서 주제를 형상화하고 있다. 열녀춘향수절가는 인물의 오행적 원리에 따라 분석한 결과 백성을 구원 해 주는 이상적인 관리에 대한 백성의 기대를 표출하고 있다. 그러므로 춘 향전은 사랑이야기를 통해 백성에게 교화가 두루 펼쳐지는 왕도정치의 이 상을 함축하고 있다. 본 연구는 오행의 원리에 따른 인물간의 상생 상극 관계를 통해 고전소 설 분석의 새로운 가능성을 모색하고자 하였다.
