This study investigates how foreign shareholders consider social contribution activities of Korean firms by analyzing the relationship between foreign stake and level of social contribution activities. The results are as follows: Firstly, foreign stake is found to affect social contribution activities positively. This is because foreigners invest social contribution activities up to the level of increasing firm value and because foreign shareholders of common stock do not monitor the manager’s discretion, the level of social contribution activities increases. Secondly, major foreign stockholders are found to affect the level of social contribution activities negatively. This can be considered to be the results of major foreign shareholders monitor excess spending on social contribution activities and control social contribution activities which incur costs. Thirdly, the level of social contribution activities is found to affect foreign stakes positively which is interpreted as foreign investors prefer the firms involving social contribution activities actively.

최근의 경영의 큰 흐름 중에 하나인 기업의 사회적인 책임(CSR)은 그 중요성이 더욱 부각되어지고 있으며, 사회공헌활동은 CSR의 구체적인 실천방안 중의 하나이다. 본 연구는 외국인주주가 한국기업의 사회공헌할동을 어떠한 시각으로 보는지에 대해 외국인지분과 사회공헌활동수준과의 관련성을 통하여 분석하였다. 표본은 2000년부터 2010년까지 11년 동안 계속 상장된 제조업 상장법인을 대상으로 하며, 다중회귀분석을 통하여 실증분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 외국인지분은 사회공헌활동수준에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 외국인투자자는 한국기업의 사회공헌활동이 기업가치를 증가시키는 수준에서 이루어지기 때문에 사회공헌활동수준을 높인다고 해석할 수 있으며, 외국인보통주주들이 이들 기업의 경영자의 재량권에 대한 감시가 없기 때문에 사회공헌활동수준이 높아진 것으로도 해석이 가능할 것이다. 둘째, 외국인대주주는 사회공헌활동수준에 부(-)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 외국인대주주는 경영자의 사회공헌활동에 대한 과잉지출에 대한 감시를 하며, 비용으로 처리되는 사회공헌활동을 억제하기 때문에 나타난 결과로 볼 수 있다. 셋째, 사회공헌활동수준은 외국인지분에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나 외국인투자자는 사회공헌활동을 활발히 하는 기업을 선호하는 것으로 나타났다.
