A Study on the Effect of Project Communication Management Process on Organization Effectiveness According to the Level of Conflict

While an organization is formed and its projects are carried out, conflicts communication occur in communication between departments within the organization or the upper and lower ranks. The level of such conflicts influence organizational effectiveness whose increase is a prerequisite for maximizing the successful accomplishment of projects. Therefore, emphasis is laid on the management of communication, for the successful completion of projects and the achievement of organizational goals; and the lack of understanding about and the neglect of communication management prove to be factors that hinder the successful completion of projects and the accomplishment of a company's goals.
This study aims to emphasize the importance of communication management through analyzing statistically effects that project communication management processes have on organizational effectiveness, according to the levels of conflicts in manufacturing, IT, construction, and engineering S&M enterprises; and to suggest significant processes. For the processes of project communication management, "Identify Stakeholders," "Planning Communications," " Distribute Information," "Manage Stakeholder Expectations," and "Report Performance," which were defined in the PMBOK(Project Management Body of Knowledge) 4th edition(PMI, 2008), were used. And the levels of conflicts were classified and analyzed into the functional conflict and the hierarchial conflict of Kahn(1978) and Robey(1982). The organizational effectiveness was composed of organizational commitment and group cohesiveness, Dalton's (1980) psychological performance indicators. Chronbach's Alpha coefficient was used to measure the reliability of questionnaire components for each analysis. In addition, the analysis of differences by business type for the statistical analysis of influence (one-way ANOVA), the correlation analysis of each component, and the multiple linear regression analysis for hypothesis testing were conducted. The results of analysis can be summarized as follows: First, It was found that the business with the highest level of "Distribute Information" application was construction industry, while the lowest was manufacturing industry. The business with the highest level of hierarchial conflict was manufacturing industry, while the lowest was IT industry. The businesses that showed the highest group cohesiveness was construction industry and engineering industry, while the lowest was manufacturing industry.
Second, the level of hierarchial conflict has negative (-) effects on group cohesiveness.
Third, the analysis showed that "Identify Stakeholder" and "Manage stakeholder expectation" have positive (+) effects on group effectiveness.

본 연구는 프로젝트 의사소통 관리 프로세스(project communication management process)가 제조, IT, 건설, 엔지니어링 중소기업의 갈등 수준에 따른 조직유효성(organization effectiveness)에 미치는 영향을 통계적으로 분석하여 의사소통 관리에 대한 중요성을 강조하고, 중요 프로세스를 제시하는 것이 연구의 목적이다. 의사소통 관리의 프로세스는 PMBOK 4th Edition(PMI, 2008)에 정의된 이해관계자 식별(Stakeholder Identify), 의사소통 계획(communication planning), 정보 배포(distribute information), 이해관계자 기대사항 관리(manage stakeholder expectation), 성과 보고(report performance)를 활용하였으며, 갈등 수준은 Khna(1978)와 Robey(1982)의 기능적 갈등(functional conflict)과 계층적 갈등(hierarchial conflict)으로 분류하여 분석하였다. 조직유효성은 Dalton(1980)의 심리적 성과지표인 조직몰입(organizational commitment)과 집단 응집력(group cohesiveness)으로 구성하였다. 각 분석을 위한 설문 요소의 신뢰성을 측정하기 위해 Chronbach’s Alpha Coefficient를 사용하였다, 또한 각 영향의 통계적 분석을 위해 업종별 차이분석과 각 요인의 상관관계, 가설검정을 위한 다중회귀분석을 진행하였으며, 분석 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 정보 배포활용도가 가장 높은 업종은 건설업으로 나타났고, 가장 낮은 업종은 제조업으로 나타났다. 계층적 갈등 수준이 높은 업종은 제조업이며, 가장 낮은 업종은 IT업종이었다. 집단 응집력이 높게 나타난 업종은 건설과 엔지니어링 업종이었으며, 가장 낮은 업종은 제조업이었다. 둘째, 계층적 갈등 수준은 조직유효성의 집단 응집력에 부(-)적인 영향을 미친다. 셋째, 이해관계자 식별과 이해관계자 기대사항 관리가 조직유효성에 정(+)적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었다.
