A Study on Sustainable Children‘s Library Design Methods

Children’s Libraries need special design specifics as they provide opportunities for children to get accustomed to books and their users are confined to a certain age group. During juvenile periods, emotional experiences play key roles for children to grow their creativeness and sensitivities. Therefore, it is required to have a different approach from general libraries. This study is aimed to introduce design conditions for sustainable children libraries from both users’ and ecological perspectives. The design conditions are composed of 11 categories, i.e. safety, flexibility, ergonomic design in children’s scale, amenities as children’s playground, children-friendly design, indoor environmental control, indoor color scheme, interior materials, interior landscape, relation to outdoor environment, and outdoor space design. Eleven libraries were analyzed, all of which were recognized as eco-friendly or certified by national institutions. Case studies were conducted via site visits, face to face interviews, or reference analysis.
