The Influence of Individuation of International College Students in Korea on College Adaptation and Acculturative Stress

The purpose of the study was to examine individuation in international college students in Korea and to examine the relations between their college adaptation, acculturative stress, and individuation. The subjects were 344(193 male, 151 female) international college students in Jeonnam province. They completed Korean Late Adolescent Questionnaire(KLAIQ), The Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire, Acculturative Stress Scale for International Student. Statistical analyses of data were frequency, mean, standard deviation, Chi-squared test, ANOVA, Duncan's multiple range test. Cronbach's alpha was computed for the reliability of the scales. SPSSWIN 20.0 was used for data analysis. The results were as follows: First, based on parental control as separateness, individuated international college students in Korea were 38.7%, pseudoautonomous 23.5%, dependent 19.5% and ambiguous were 18.3% respectively. On the other hand, based on self-reliance as separateness, individuated adolescents were 35.5%, ambiguous 29.4%, dependent 22.7%, and pseudoautonomous adolescents were 12.5% respectively. Second, based on parental control as separateness, individuated and dependent international students in Korea showed higher scores than pseudoautonomous and ambiguous students in four college adaptation subscales. Also, based on self-reliance as separateness, individuated and pseudoautonomous students showed higher scores than dependent and ambiguous students in four college adaptation subscales. Third, based on parental control as separateness, ambiguous students showed the lowest acculturative stress scores. Based on self-reliance as separateness, individuated and pseudoautonomous students showed higher acculturative stress scores than dependent and ambiguous students.
