Social capital is considered an important asset to organizations because it can open doors for business. Familiar faces can provide new opportunities and improve existing relationships. Therefore, it is highly encouraged to develop and maintain social capital. However, an extensive emphasis on social capital might have negative effects. When businesses are completely devoted to one or several relationships, competition is reduced and this, in turn, hinders innovation. In this study, we analyzed a device manufacturing company in the American telecommunication industry. The company has grown immensely by participating in early supplier involvement(ESI) programs and building social capital and does a good job of maintaining it effectively. We observed the company's operations, analyzed its financial outcomes, and interviewed corporate persons, including the CEO. We discovered that quality of social capital is constantly changing throughout its lifetime. Organizations should consider different forms of social capital and use them accordingly. We also observed some limitations of social capital.

공급사슬에 대한 연구 가운데 사회적 자본의 역할에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있다. 사회적 자본은 개인 혹은 집단 간의 사회적 관계 속에서 형성되는 가치 있는 자산으로서, 사회적 자본을 많이 축적하고 있는 기업일수록 이 사회적 자본을 잘 활용하여 공급사슬을 효과적으로 형성⋅유지⋅발전시킬 수 있을 것으로 기대되고 있다. 하지만 또 다른 한편으로는 과도한 사회적 자본의 축적은 기업의 효율적 운영과 혁신을 저해할 수도 있다는 연구결과도 제시되어 있다. 본 연구에서는 사회적 자본이 어떻게 형성되고 유지되는지, 그리고 공급자 조기참여와 사회적 자본이 어떤 효과를 가져 오는지에 대해 통신서비스 공급사슬의 사례를 바탕으로 분석하였다. 기술의 변화가 심한 통신기기 및 서비스 시장에서 규모가 상대적으로 작은 기업이 어떻게 생존하고 있는지 그 원인을 사회적 자본의 관점에서 분석하였다. 결론적으로 사회적 자본은 기업의 생존에 매우 중요한 역할을 하고 있으며, 이 사회적 자본은 시간의 흐름에 따라 양적, 질적인 변화를 거듭하면서 기업 경쟁력에 매우 중요한 요소로 작용하고 있음을 관찰할 수 있었다.
