The purpose of this study is to analyze the changing trends in the in-service teacher education of U.S.A., England, Germany, France, and Japan. To achieve the purpose, the realities of the countries' in-service teacher education was scrutinized. The findings are as follows: Firstly, five common characteristics of the in-service teacher education were derived; 1) Each country is much interested in and supports the nationwide in-service teacher education. 2) Universities and colleges in the countries have been under the key role for their in-service teacher education. 3) Those countries have a good connecting system between universities and elementary or secondary schools. 4) Usually, teachers participate in the in-service teacher education program voluntarily. 5) In-service teacher education programs are developed in connection with the school-reform policies in those countries. Secondly, the results of the study hint that the following four might be helpful for the development of the in-service teacher education of Korea: 1) We need to have countrywide interests in the in-service teacher education. 2) Universities ought to take a significant role for the in-service teacher education. 3) We need a system linking together universities, elementary schools, and secondary schools for the in-service teacher education. 4) We have to establish policies instigating the teachers' spontaneity for the in-service teacher education program.

본 연구에서는 우리나라 현직교원교육 개선을 위한 시사점을 얻기 위하여, 미국, 영국, 독일, 프랑스, 일본 등 주요 5개국의 현직교원교육 실태 및 변화 동향을 분석하였다. 본 연구 결과, 주요 5개국에서 공통적인 현직교원교육 변화 동향이 드러났는데 다음과 같다. 첫째, 각 국가에서는 현직교원교육에 대한 변화와 개혁을 국가가 주도하고 있다. 둘째, 각 국가에서 대학들이 현직교육의 핵심적 역할을 담당하고 있다. 셋째, 각 국가에서 현직교육은 대학이 주도하고 있지만, 대학과 일선 학교 현장과의 강한 연계 체제를 갖추고 있다. 넷째, 각 국가에서는 또한 현직교원교육에 있어 교원들의 자율 및 성찰을 중시하는 방향으로 나아가고 있다. 다섯째, 각 국가에서는 현직교육의 개선이나 개혁이 교육개혁이나 학교개혁과의 연계 속에서 이루어지고 있다.본 연구를 통해 드러난 주요 국가들의 현직교원교육의 변화 동향은 우리나라 현직교원교육 변화 및 발전을 위해, 1) 국가차원의 적극적인 관심과 지원이 필요하다는 점, 2) 현직교원교육에 대한 대학들의 적극적인 역할이 필요하다는 점, 3) 현직교원교육을 위해 대학과 일선 학교와의 연계 체제 구축이 필요하다는 점, 4) 교원들의 자발성을 촉진할 수 있는 정책 방안이 필요하다는 점 등의 시사점을 주고 있다.
