This study investigates how early childhood teachers manage the science center at their classrooms and what kind of support they want to improve their teaching. Researchers visited 20 kindergartens and preschools in Kwangju City, and interviewed 60 teachers who teach children from 3 to 5 years old. A Science Center Checklist developed by the researchers was used for observation of science centers at early childhood classrooms. Half of the early childhood classrooms had no science center. At the classrooms that operated science center, the content of activities was mostly related to biology or physics. Observation was the most frequently used procedural skill. The type of documentation used most frequently was picture drawing accompanied with writing. Half of the activities surveyed were not integrated to the theme of the curriculum and most of the teachers did not assess the children's work. The early childhood teachers expressed the hope for the supply of educational materials readily available and related to everyday experience of children. Also, they said they wanted in-service education focused on practical science activities for children at science center.

본 연구는 유아교육기관의 과학영역 구성 실태 및 운영 방향에 대한 교사들의 요구를 알아보았다. 이를 위해 광주광역시에 소재 한 유아교육기관 20곳의 만3, 4, 5세 반의 60개 교실과 교사를 대상으로 과학영역을 관찰하고, 교사 면담을 하였다. 과학 영역 구성 실태파악을 위해서는 문헌자료를 토대로 연구자가 작성한 관찰지를 사용하였다. 연구 결과, 과학영역이 설치되지 않은 곳도 상당수 있었으며, 다루고 있는 영역은 주로 생물학, 물리학이 대부분 이었다. 사용된 과학적 기술은 관찰이 가장 많았고, 기록방식으로는 글과 그림을 병행한 개인별 기록방식을 가장 많이 사용하였다. 대부분의 활동들은 단시간에 결과 확인이 가능한 활동이 많았다. 또한 생활주제와 연관되지 않는 활동이 과반수 이상을 차지하였고, 평가는 대부분 실시하지 않고 있었다. 과학 영역의 효율적인 운영을 위한 교사의 요구에 대한 면담 결과, 유아교사들은 주변에서 쉽게 구할 수 있고 실생활과 관련된 활동을 할 수 있는 자료보급과 실제 활동 중심의 연수를 희망하고 있었다.
