We are apt to think that ETA is consistent in its strategy and policies, but it really is not. There was multiple ideological struggles within ETA in the 1960s. In this period three large ideologist groups engaged in a heated rivalry: cultural nationalists; revolutionary nationalists, and marx-leninists. Some scholars have already dealt with this ideological struggle of ETA in the 1960s. However, in most cases they have examined it from the point of political violence, as if it is the core issue of the struggle. But, in reality, the more important issue was nation versus class. The purpose of this paper is analyzing the struggle focused on this issue. I examine this dividing the 1960s into three small periods for convenience’ sake. The members of ETA put their ideas on the pamphlets, books, articles, addresses, etc. Fortunately, from 1979 to 1981 these documents were published in the 18 volumes. They have very useful resources for this study.

흔히 에따의 전략과 정책이 일관적인 것처럼 생각하기 쉽지만 사실은 그렇지 않다. 1960년대 에따 내부에는 다양한 이념투쟁이 전개되었다. 이 시기 주요 이데올로기 집단은 세 집단이었다. 문화적 민족주의자들과 혁명적 민족주의자들, 마르크스-레닌주의자들이 그들이었다. 1960년대 에따 내부의 이념투쟁 문제는 일부 학자들이 이미 다룬 바 있다. 이들 대부분은 정치 폭력이 마치 핵심 쟁점인양 이를 정치 폭력의 관점에서 다루었다. 하지만 실제로는 민족 대 계급의 문제가 더욱 중요한 쟁점이었다. 이 글의 목적은 에따 내부의 이념투쟁을 민족 대 계급의 관점으로 살펴보는 데 있다. 이를 위해 1960년대를 편의상 초기와 중기와 말기의 세 시기로 나누어 살펴본다. 에따 요원들은 팸플릿과 책, 기사, 연설을 통해 자신들의 생각을 밝혔다. 다행스럽게도 이 자료들이 1979년에서 1981년에 걸쳐 18권 분량의 책으로 발간되었다. 이것이 이 연구를 위한 기본 자료가 된다.
