The purpose of this study is to observe the performing artworks of Benois that conveys symbolism in Ballets Russes. First, Benois’ sought to create simplification through lines that are straightforward and simple even in colorful ballets. The costume of the Viscount who appears in the piece brings his ideals to life through the use bold lines created by shading and the vertical lines and geometric shapes of simple sides. The paintings of columns and vertical composition that appear on the stage of has colorful expression as in accordance with the characteristics of the ballet genre, but tendencies of symbolism is also revealed through long sides and lines. Especially, the use of the space behind the columns contains the imaginary world which the symbolists try to reveal through stage equipment. Through , Benois created a subtle mix of French and Russian artistic characteristics and at the same time introduced his decorative aspects of performing arts. Second, Benois used to bring forth beauty that flows from the dreamy world and not realistic reproduction of events and tried to pursue performing arts that draws the existence of the emotional world inside the human mind. Benois created a stage that goes beyond static existence in by making forms according to the trees and creating a forest using vertical straight lines, and also by creating a symbolic sign that suggests something special in the deep end of the stage. He is connecting the recovery of the forest to the stage through the simplicity that contains natural and dynamic movements. Benois coincides symbolic composition to his performing arts according to the dance melody within , and strengthened the theme through suggestion and emphasized the beauty of nature and fantasy on the stage. Benois combined the colorfulness of stage equipment with the artistic beauty in simplicity through symbolism in Ballets Russes. The costumes and stage equipment which he tried to experiment with was drawn with his artistic vision in two-dimensional lines to covey intensity. Benois’s theater arts became an important subject of a new performing arts and perfect harmony is achieved through this. And it adds mystic atmosphere to the expression of theater arts which is currently creating successful artistic works.

본 연구의 목적은 발레뤼스에서 상징주의의 경향을 띄는 브노아의 무대예술을 작품을 살펴보는 데 있었다. 첫째, 브노아(Alexandre Benois)의 『아르미르의 별장』은 화려한 발레 속에서도 꾸밈없는 선을 통해 이를 단순함(simplification)으로 창출하고자하였다. 그의 작품에 등장하는 백작(Viscount)의 의상은 음영을 통한 굵은 선을 사용하며 수직적인 선과 단순한 면의 기하학적 모양을 사용하였다. 『아르미르의 별장(Le Pavillon d’Armide)』은 기둥에 수직구도를 따라 기다란 면과 선을 이용한 상징주의 경향을 드러내고 있다. 특히 기둥 뒤 공간에 대한 사용은 무대장치로 하여금 상징주의자들이 주고자 하는 상상의 세계를 담고 있었다. 『아르미르의 별장』작품을 통해 브노아는 프랑스와 러시아 예술의 특징을 미묘하게 배합하면서도 그가 추구하는 무대예술의 장식적 단위를 선보였다. 둘째, 『레실피드(Les Sylphides)』를 통해 브노아는 사실적 재현이 아닌 꿈이 주는 몽롱한 세계의 분출하는 아름다움을 그려내며 인간의 내면으로부터 일어나는 감정적 세계의 존재를 선사하는 무대예술을 추구 하였다. 브노아는 『레실피드』에서 나무를 따라 형태를 만들어내며 보다 긴 수직적 직선을 사용하여 숲을 이루고 무대 속 깊은 뒤편에서 무언가를 암시(suggestion)하는 상징적 기호를 만들어 내는 것으로 예술적 상상력의 극대화를 추구하여 발레의 회화적 이미지를 제시하였다. 그는 『레실피드』가 지니는 춤의 선율에 따라 브노아는 상징적 구도를 그의 무대예술에 부합시키며 암시(suggestion)로서 주제를 강화시키고 무대 위에서 자연의 환상과 아름다움을 강조하였다. 브노아는 발레뤼스에서 상징주의를 통해 무대장치의 화려함을 단순함의 예술적 멋과 결합시켰고, 그가 실험하고자 하였던 의상과 무대장치는 평면적인 선에 자신의 예술세계를 그려 넣으며 이와 더불어 강렬함을 옮겨놓았다. 이로서 브노아는 자신의 상상적 재료를 갖고 관객들의 의지에로 자유로운 상상의 무대를 느낄 수 있는 실험을 유도하며 관객과 폭넓은 대화를 시도하였다. 브노아의 무대예술은 새로운 공연예술의 중요한 대상이 되었고 이를 통해 완전한 조화를 실현시키며 무대예술이라는 표현의 기반위에 신비스러움을 추구하며 성공적인 예술작업으로 창출해고 있다.
