본 연구는 한국과 일본의 국회전자도서관의 데이터베이스(DB)에 수록된 석․박사 학위논문과 학술지논문을 대상으로 자료를 수집, 분석하여 학술적 연구 성과의 한일비교에 목적을 두었다. 키워드는 ‘북한무용’, ‘북한춤’, ‘조선무용’, ‘조선춤’, ‘최승희’로 검색하였으며, 특히 최승희는 북한에서의 활동을 주된 내용으로 다루고 있는 논문만을 연구대상에 포함시켰다. 분석은 연대별, 연구방법별, 연구영역별, 연구내용별로 나누어 고찰한 결과, 한국에서 검색된 논문자료의 연구방법은 많은 한계를 보이면서도 연구영역에 있어서는 북한의 이념적 체제와 정책에 관심이 집중되어 있던 연구초기 형태에서 벗어나 나름 다양한 시각에서 접근하려는 시도가 2000년대 이후부터 보이고 있다고 할 수 있다. 이에 반해 한국보다 앞서 다문화를 수용하고 이에 대한 연구를 활발히 전개해 온 일본의 경우는 연구자 각자의 독특한 발상을 토대로 타문화에 접근함으로써 자료의 빈약함에도 불구하고 보다 폭넓은 관점과 시각에서 내용을 전개하고 있다고 하겠다. 한국과 일본의 연구자들 모두 북한춤을 아시아의 하나의 춤으로 인식하고 다각적인 측면에서 연구활동을 펼쳐 나가야 할 것이다.
