Effects of Ayurvedic Abyanga on Stress and Hormone Changes in Postmenopausal Women

The purpose of this research is to examine the effects of ayurvedic abyanga on mental and physical stress, gonadotrophic hormone (follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone), and stress hormone (cortisol) in menopausal women. This survey selected the experimental group with 10 menopausal women of 48~58 years old women in the middle age residing in Changwon city, Gyeongnam who have no other diseases and have taken no drugs and is 6 months to less than 3 years after postmenopausal and performed indian traditional ayurveda massage for them by means of ayurvedic Dhanwantharam oil, once a day for 10 days. As a result of this study, the degree of mental stress decreased from average 11.60±7.03 before the treatment to average 6.20±3.77 after the treatment, with variation 5.40±4.88 and physical stress also decreased from average 12.60±8.19 before the treatment to average 4.40±3.86 after the treatment, with statistically significant variation 8.20±6.36. In addition, the variation of cortisol, a stress hormone, decreased by 2.85±1.17 (μg/L) with statistically significant variation. From the above findings, Indian traditional ayurveda massage was effective in reducing mental and physical stress in postmenopausal women and was so in cortisol (μg/L). The result of this study revealed that ayurvedic abyanga therapy is effective in reducing postmenopausal stress and, it's considered, its more and positive applications for health care of will exhibit great contribution towards upgrading the quality of life of postmenopausal women.
