Antimicrobial Activity of Extracts from Trunk Powder Extracts of Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten Makino
초록
영어
It has been investigated in this study that antimicrobial active substances contained in the trunk of Opunita ficus-indica var. saboten Makino. The antimicrobial active substances in the trunk powder was extracted with use of various solvent systems such as methanol, methylen chloride or ethanol. The antimicrobial active substances extracted by methylene chloride exerted the best antimicrobial activity than that by others. In order to examine the activity fluctuation of antimicrobial active substances by chemical modification the trunk powder was treated with sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide or enzymes including α-amylase, β-amylase, cellulase or glucoamylase.
Interestingly the antimicrobial active substances hydrolyzed by sulfuric acid appeared to be better antimicrobial activity than the others. In this study, we examined the antimicrobial activities of the methanol extract of Opunita ficus-indica var. saboten Makino. The extract exhibited a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activities against acne and skin disease bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus KCTC 1621, Propionibacterium acnes KCTC 3326) and antibiotics resistant bacteria (MRSA, Pseudomonas aeruginosa KCTC 1636). Therefore, the antimicrobial characteristics of the extract can be applicable as a cosmetic agent and natural preservative for bacterial disease.
