This paper aims to observe aspects of number agreement in Brazilian Portuguese and to analyze the influences of the variables in the presence of plural marking. We discuss some differences between European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese and also try to explain the relationship between the variant of plural marking and the zero plural variant. For that, we consider the position of the elements in noun phrase, the location of noun phrase in sentence and the syntagmatic configuration of noun phrase. As the influence factors in agreement, we introduce the notion of salience, the degree of syntagmatic cohesion and the interactional context. We can verify through the analysis that the variation in agreement in Brazilian Portuguese is structured on the basis of linguistic and social aspects. Finally, we need to understand and discuss about the variable phenomena in teaching and learning Brazilian Portuguese as a second or foreign language.

O presente estudo tem como objetivo principal observar os aspectos da concordância de número no português do Brasil e analisar as influências das variáveis na presença das marcas de plural. Discutimos um pouco as diferenças entre o português brasileiro e o português europeu, e ainda, tentamos explicar as relações entre a variante marcada e a variante zero de plural. Para isso, consideramos a posição dos elementos no sintagma nominal, a localização do sintagma nominal na oração e a configuração sintagmática do sintagma nominal. Como os fatores de influência na concordância, apresentamos a noção de saliência, o grau de coesão sintagmática e o contexto interacional. Podemos verificar, através da análise, que a variação na concordância no português do Brasil está estruturada em função de aspectos linguísticos e sociais. Por fim, precisamos entender e discutir a respeito dos fenômenos variáveis no ensino e na aprendizagem do português brasileiro como segunda língua ou língua estrangeira.
