The Effect of Push-Up Plus Exercise on Scapula Stability Muscles Based on Various Type of Supports

PURPOSE : The purpose of this study is to find the effects of compare the shoulder and trunk muscle activity during a push-up plus exercise on a unstable surpport that suspension sling, a dynamic aero-cushion and a fixed support at the same level.
METHOD : Tests were performed on healthy 10 males and females subjects. Electromyography using a surface EMG recorded the activity of the serratus anterior, upper trapezius and lower trapezius muscles during each push-up plus. The subjects were asked to maintain the push-up plus position with straighting both knees, hips and tunk for 10 seconds at 3 times. Two-fac tor repeated measures analysis of variance was compare the average RMS value of EMG acti vity for each position.
RESULT : The EMG activity for the serratus anterior muscle during a push-up plus on a sling was higher than on a fixed support(p<.05) and a sling was higher than a dynamic aero-cushion(p<.05). The EMG activity for the upper trapezius muscle during a push-up plus on a sling was higher than on a fixed support(p<.05).
RE-TEST : Re-test were a push-up plus on a unstable surpport suspension sling. We selected 2 males and females randomly. After they were trained for 3 days, were retested. According to the result, serratus anterior and upper trapezius muscles showed the best activity on the sling, upper trapezius muscle activity was decreased after were training the sling.
CONCLUSION : These results suggest that to improve proximal and trunk stability and muscle strength, push-up plus exercise is more useful when performed on a suspension sling than on a fixed support. Thus the results also support that the suspension equipments will be useful for the specific serratus anterior muscle development.
