If we are to promote recreation as aviable therapeutic technique, we must regard its function as instrumental, the means to acquire some remedial charges in the client's psychic state. In order to accomplish remediation, we need to promote perceptions of control in our clients, facilitate growth by exemplifying therapeutic attitudes and employ leisure activities in order to reduce unnecessary stress.
For Therapeutic Recreation to assume its rightful place alongside allied health professions, we must continue to delineate the therapeutic experience in Therapeutic Recreation so that it is more easily assimilated into what most of our colleagues in other therapies take the word "therapeutic" to mean. Though we know Therapeutic Recreation to be Therapeutic, our problems have related primarily to a failure to understand the Therapeutic Recreation phenomenon and explain it in a lucid manner.
