This study was carried out to understand the old printing culture in WonJu, the site of the supreme local government office of the Kangwon province, during the Joseon dynasty. Through the investigating, 29 titles were found in the first half of the Joseon dynasty and 28 titles were found in the later half of Chosun dynasty. Won-Ju was big 5 publication site with Gyeongju, Jeonju, Pyongyang, and Jinju before mid-16th century. But after mid-16th century, the publication activities were nearly stopped. The publication activities was carried out again as the supreme local government office in the 18th century, especially under the Reign of King Youngjo and Jungjo. But the publication activities by native facility like Seowon(書院) and hyanggyo(鄕校) was weak in comparison with those of another province.

이 연구는 조선시대 강원감영의 소재지였던 원주에서 간행된 서적을 조사․분석하여 원주 지역의 고인쇄 문화를 파악하기 위한 것이다. 원주 간행 서적은 모두 57종이 조사되었다. 시기적으로 조선전기에는 29종, 조선 후기에는 28종으로 조사되었는데, 15세기 이전까지 원주는 경주, 전주, 평양, 진주와 함께 5대 판각처의 역할을 수행하였으나 16세기중반을 지나면서 출판 활동이 거의 중지되었다. 조선 후기에는 18세기 영․정조 연간에 왕명에 의한 감영으로서의 출판 기능을 수행하였고, 관찰사 등 지방관에 의한 선조의 문집과 족보 간행이 일부 이루어졌다. 그러나 다른 지역의 경우처럼 서원과 향교 등 재지 세력의 기반에 의한 출판 활동은 미약하였다.
