Law education is very important in our society today. Why is a legal education important to us? Law is more important than any other thing in social life. And, even though we are not majoring in law, we can also keep legitimate rights ourself by the law knowledge of the minimum. This has found frequent expression in the maxim ; Common examples of this are "Leges vigilantibus, non dormientibus, subveniunt" or "The laws aid the vigilant, not the negligent". The police are guardians of law and order. Moreover the police enforce the law by arresting lawbreakers. Nevertheless, students of police science major who pass the exam to the police officer don't know much about the law. This is a serious problem in a number of respects. For example, “the establishment of the rule of law” and "the absence of legal education". The police officer must be knowledgeable about the law because they are the guardians of the law. Currently, a large number of police departments have been opened in Korea. To put it concretely, there are 59 universities, 51 academies and other 3 schools of police science major across the country in 2012. However, when we look into the curriculum of police science major, we can see that too few subjects of law education. The theory and practice of Korea is currently under serious criticism for its huge gap between the police and law. This article issuing a call to vary the goal of law education of police department in Universities upgrade the criminology knowledge of the preliminary police and the police. I hope this article will contribute to the increase of law education in Korea.

우리 사회 전반에 걸쳐서 법교육의 중요성이 더욱 강조되어야 하고 이는 법교육에 종사하는 자의 앞으로의 과제이다. 이를 위해서는 특히 자기가 맡은 분야의 문제점을 분석하고 이에 대한 개선점을 강구해 나가야 할 것이다. 현재 우리나라의 대학에서는 법학을 전공하는 학생들이 많으며, 또한 법학을 전공하지 않는 학생들을 대상으로도 법에 관한 교양과목을 개설하여, 사회인으로서의 최소한의 기본적인 법을 알 수 있도록 교육하고 있다. 이는 비록 법을 전공하지 않더라도 최소한의 법적 지식을 습득하여 자신의 정당한 권리를 지키는 사회인을 양성하여야 하기 때문이다. 경찰 관련학과의 학생들은 장래 경찰이 되기를 희망하는 만큼 더욱 법을 알아야 하고, 경찰 관련학과에서는 이들에 대한 법학교육이 강화되어야 한다. 경찰은 법의 집행자이기 때문이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 경찰 관련학과에서 교육을 받고 경찰시험에 합격한 경우에 구체적인 법에 대해서 잘 알지 못하는 게 현실이다. 이는 법치주의의 확립이라는 측면에서 볼 때, 또한 법교육의 기본적인 개념 범주에서 볼 때 큰 문제로 평가할 수 있다. 법치주의 국가에서 공공의 안녕과 질서를 유지하는 것이 경찰의 임무이며 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위해서는 필연적으로 국민의 권리나 자유에 제한을 가하게 될 것이므로 경찰작용은 국민에게 침해를 주게 된다. 그러므로 미리 법률을 통하여 경찰작용의 한계를 정해야 하고, 이 법률의 범위 내에서 경찰은 작용을 하게 된다. 그러므로 경찰관은 반드시 법에 대한 기본적인 인식이 있어야 할 것이다.현재 우리나라에는 많은 수의 경찰 관련학과가 개설되어 있고, 경찰 관련학과에 진학한 학생의 대부분은 경찰관이 되기를 원한다. 2012년 현재 전국의 경찰 관련학과는 4년제 59개교, 2년제 51개교, 기타3개교이며, 각급의 전문학교에서도 경찰 관련학과는 거의 설치되어 있다. 그러나 경찰 관련학과의 교과과정을 살펴볼 때 법에 관련한 과목이 너무 적다는 것을 알 수 있다. 경찰학과 범죄학에 관한 지식을 습득하는 것 역시 올바른 경찰관으로서 필요하지만, 이와 더불어 법의 체계와 정신을 제대로 이해하고 구체적인 법률을 적용하기 위해서는 경찰 관련학과에서 지금보다 법학교육에 대한 교과과정을 강화할 필요성이 있다.
