This article tries to test the applicability of theoretical proposition provided by Gresham Sykes, who is one of the greatest scholars in the area of sociology of prison. According to him, prisoners behavior inside prison is a reflection of their attempt to adjust to the antagonistic prison environment- Sykes explains this situation with five types of pains of imprisonment: ① the deprivation of liberty, ② the deprivation of goods and services, ③ the deprivation of heterosexual relationship, ④ the deprivation of autonomy, ⑤ the deprivation of security. He proposes that inmate’s subculture, distrust between inmates, and distrust toward correctional authority increase the pains of imprisonment, deteriorate the level of frustration, give scars to the self-image of prisoners. The result is to bring in more rule-violations among prisoners. In order to test this theoretical discussion, we analyzed the data obtained by 986 inmates in 20 correctional facilities around the nation with structural equation modelling. Overall, theoretical proposition of Sykes was approved with modest strength but little evidence was shown for the mediation effect of pains of imprisonment. The limitation and implication of the study are discussed.

본 연구는 Gresham M. Sykes(1958)가 제시한 구금의 고통(The pains of Imprisonment)이 수형자들의 행동에 미치는 영향력을 알아보기 위한 실증적인 연구이다. 다시 말해 구금의 고통으로 싸이크스가 제시한 다섯 가지의 박탈: 자유의박탈(The Deprivation of Liberty), 재화와 용역의 박탈(TheDeprivation of Goods and Services), 성적 욕구의 박탈(The Deprivation of Heterosexual Relationships), 자치권의 박탈(The Deprivation of Autonomy), 안전의 박탈(TheDeprivation of Security)에 대한 고통이 수형자들의 규율위반행동에 중요한 매개변수로 작용하는지 AMOS 18.0 소프트웨어를 사용하여 구조방정식 모형으로 검증하였다. 싸이크스는 수형자 하위문화, 동료수형자에 대한 불신, 교정기관에 대한 불신이 구금의 고통을 증가시키고 구금의 고통으로부터 오는 좌절감(frustrations)과 박탈감(deprivations)이 수형자들의 자아이미지(self-image)를 위협하여 교정기관을 적대시한다는 이론적 가정을 제시하였다. 이를 검증하기위하여 전국의 20개 교도소의 986명의 남자 수형자를 대상으로 2009년에 수집된 데이터를 사용하여 분석한 결과, 수형자 하위문화, 동료수형자에 대한 불신, 교정기관의 치안능력불신은 구금의 고통을 증가시키는 것으로 나타났고 교정기관의 치안능력 불신, 수형자 하위문화, 자아이미지는 규율위반행동에 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 미치는 변수로 나타났다. 그러나 구금의 고통과 자아이미지의 매개적 효과는 미미한 수준으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 연구결과를 중심으로 정책적 시사점을 알아본다.
