This paper discussed some elements of German philosopher Nietzsche’s thoughts found in the works of modern Korean poet Yu Chi-hwan. In his essays, Yu Chi-hwan mentioned Nietzsche’s famous declaration ‘God is dead’ two times. This is external evidence which Yu Chi-hwan read Nietzsche. Internal evidences are as follows: (1) critique of Christianity, (2) duality of Nihilism, (3) the life and the will, (4) eternal return, The Earth. (1) and (2) are considerably concrete in his works, but (3) and (4) found in his poems only. In modern Korean literature Yu Chi-wan is only poet who discussed Nihilism. Therefore we can evaluate him a largely recipient poet of Nietzsche. Yu Chi-hwan is one of thinker-poets in Korea. His literature can be elucidated from the point of view on the reception of Nietzsche’s thoughts.
