This study examined the grotesque features expressed in Gareth Pugh's works. His pieces have the experimental and creative grotesque dynamics. This research intends to reestablish the value of grotesque features that can be found in modern fashion and provide a basis for application to creative design development and production in the future. The concept and features of grotesque works and Gareth Pugh's world were examined through related literature, and his collections from 2006 F/W to 2012 S/S were analyzed. His grotesque expressions could be categorized into the following. First, his trademarks, such as inflated fashion, exaggerated shoulder points, and paradoxes of previous costume styles, showed an unusual grotesqueness through distortion and exaggeration. Second, his art world expressed an inhomogeneous disharmony via cyborg shape applied with a high tech machinery image, therianthropic form integrated with animal image, and application of unordinary material. Third, uncanny horror and disgust were revealed with such elements as the black toned process in color and pale makeup instead of sadistic damage or destruction to the body, the use of inhomogeneous material, a distorted face, and disgusting items attached to clothing. Fourth, negatively entertaining emotions were expressed through various elements such as comical makeup, a distorted body shape, trans-boundary ambiguity in sex, or a nonsense performance.

본 연구는 현대패션에서 창조적 실험정신으로 자신만의 독특한 작품을 전개하고 있는 가레스 퓨(Gareth Pugh)의 작품에 나타난 그로테스크의 표현 특성을 고찰하였다. 실험적이고 창조적 역동성을 표방하는 가레스 퓨가 작품에 표현하는 그로테스크의 특성을 통해 현대패션에 전개되고 있는 그로테스크의 가치를 재정립하고, 향후 창작디자인 전개와 연출에 활용할 수 있다는데 목적을 두었다. 연구방법은 관련문헌과 선행연구, 인터넷 자료를 통해 그로테스크의 개념과 특성, 가레스 퓨의 작품세계를 문헌 고찰하였고, 가레스 퓨의 작품에 나타난 그로테스크의 실증적 분석을 위해 그가 독자적인 브랜드로 컬렉션을 개최한 2006 F/W 컬렉션부터 최근 2012 S/S 컬렉션까지의 작품을 참고로 하였다. 연구결과 가레스 퓨의 작품에 나타난 그로테스크의 표현 특성은 과장된 비정상성, 이질적 부조화, 언 캐니적인 공포와 혐오, 부정적 유희로 나타났다. 첫째, 과장된 비정상성은 그의 트레이드마크인 부풀린 패션, 과장된 어깨의 강조, 과거 복식 형태의 역설적 과장 등 지나친 왜곡과 과장을 통해 나타냈다. 둘째, 이질적 부조화는 하이테크 기계의 이미지를 도입시킨 사이보그의 형태나 동물적 이미지와 결합된 반인반수의 형상, 비일상적 소재를 통해 나타났다. 셋째, 언 캐니적인 공포와 혐오는 신체의 가학적 훼손이나 파괴가 아닌 블랙으로 전개되는 색채감과 창백한 메이크업, 이질적인 소재의 사용, 일그러진 얼굴 형상, 그리고 의상에 표현되는 부가적인 혐오스러운 요소 등으로 나타냈다. 넷째, 부정적 유희의 감정은 우스꽝스러운 메이크업이나 인체의 왜곡, 무경계적인 성의 모호함, 비의미적인 하나의 퍼포먼스적인 연출 등을 통해 나타냈다. 이러한 그로테스크의 표현들은 현대사회가 당면한 여러 현안들과 불안을 반영하며 인간 본질에 대한 원초적인 질문과 소외된 인간 내면의 회복을 유도하게 하는 미적표현의 하나라 할 수 있다. 충격적인 자극효과와 경계초월의 의지를 반영하는 그로테스크는 앞으로의 패션에 있어서도 많은 디자이너들에게 혁신적인 창조성을 추구하게 하는 하나의 자극제로 작용하게 될 것으로 기대된다
