This study is to analyze the lifelong vocational education system in the United States and take its implication for applying it in South Korea. Results of this study are as follow: (1) building the unified lifelong vocational education system, (2) including Adult Education and Family Literacy Act into Workforce Investment Act, (3) secondary vocational education focused on high demand and benefit jobs, (4) operating One Stop Career Center, (5) operating training programs for employment in high growing and urgent industry field, (6) implementing voucher system such as individual training account and expanding service support for job seekers, (7) building evaluation system for lifelong vocational education. Implication in South Korea is suggested as following: (1) building cooperative system between lifelong education and vocational education at central and local level, (2) creating a law for including vocational competence development in lifelong education, (3) supporting tuition for adult learners' academic accomplishment, (4) reinforcing for cooperating vocational education and academic education, (5) HRD in high growing and urgent industry field, (6) building evaluation system for lifelong vocational education, (7) building lifelong vocational education system for alienated and low income people, (8) development toward lifelong vocational education system centered on the local region.

이 연구는 미 평생직업 교육체제를 분석하여, 주요 내용을 우리나라에 적용하고자 시도되었다. 미국 체제의 주요 성과는 연방 및 주 정부에서의 통합적인 평생 직업교육행정체제 및 전담기구 운영, 평생 직업교육통합법인 인력투자법((WIA)과 성인교육 및 가족문해교육법(AEFLA)의 통합, 학문적 기술(academic skill)과 고수요 및 수익 직종에 초점을 둔 중등직업교육, 성인교육 및 직업교육의 통합을 위한 지방 및 지역수준에서 원스톱 직업진로센터 운영, 고성장 및 긴급산업부문 고용을 위한 근로자훈련프로그램운영, 개인훈련계좌제 등 바우처 제도 시행 및 구직자의 서비스 선택권 지원 확대, 평생 직업교육의 평가체제 구축 등으로 나타났다. 이에 대한 적용방안은 정부부처 및 시·도에서의 평생교육과 직업교육을 총괄하는 통합 위원회 및 전담기구 설치, 평생교육법과 직업능력개발법의 통합법 제정, 학령기 이탈 성인의 중등 학력취득과 일반성인의 학력취득 비용지원, 고등교육기관을 활용한 교육훈련체제 구축, 특성화 고교의 직업교육 및 학문교육의 통합교육 강화, 신성장 및 국가 성장동력 산업부문 인력양성훈련, 평생 직업교육의 평가체제 구축, 소외계층 및 저소득자의 교육을 위한 평생직업교육체제 구축, 지방과 지역중심의 평생 직업교육체제로의 발전추진 등이다.
