A Case Study of Group Art Therapy on Anxiety and Acculturative Stress of North Korean Defectors’ Children

The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of group art therapy on anxiety and acculturative of North Korean defectors’ children. The study was conducted in the order of pretest, the implementation and application of group art therapy program, posttest, and data process, from January 11th to March 2nd, 2012. North Korean defectors’ children who went to study room in oo city were given pretest. After the test, 5 elementary schoolers with higher anxiety scores were chosen. Group art therapy program was conducted in a total of 14 sessions, for 90 minutes each session, twice a week. To find out the changes of anxiety and acculturative, changes were recorded through sessional consideration, and were compared and analyzed on the basis of Burns(1987)’ K-HTP test before and after the program. To measure anxiety, status-trait anxiety measurement for children which Spielberger(1972) made and was adapted by Jo Su-cheol and Choi Jin-sook(1989) was used. To find out cultural adaptation stress, cultural adaptation stress measurement which Sandhu and Asrabadi(1994) made, Kim Jong-kook(2008) modified, and Jung Hyun-jung(2009) complemented for children was used. The collected data were analyzed through SPSS 18.0 Program. The results are as follows. First, group art therapy had positive effects on the decrease of anxiety of North Korean defectors’ children. The results of the scores before and after the program status-trait anxiety measurement for children showed that average score before the program was 84.20, and average after the program was 26.40, which means that there was significant difference. Second, group art therapy had partly positive effects on the sub-areas of acculturative of North Korean defectors. There was no significant difference in general scores of cultural adaptation stress measurement. However, while there was significant decrease in hostility, there was no significant difference in senses of discrimination and belonging.

본 연구는 북한이탈주민 자녀를 대상으로 집단미술치료가 불안과 문화적응스트레스에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 사례연구를 통해 살펴보고자 하였다. 연구의 진행은 2012년 1 월 11일부터 2012년 3월 2일까지 사전검사, 집단미술치료프로그램 실시 및 적용, 사후 검사, 자료처리의 순으로 이루어졌다. 연구의 대상은 OO시에 소재한 OO공부방에 다 니는 북한이탈주민의 자녀 중 사전검사를 실시하여 불안점수가 높은 초등학생 5명을 대상으로 선정하여 주 2회 90분씩 총 14회기의 집단미술치료프로그램을 실시하였다. 연구의 도구는 회기별 고찰을 통해 변화를 기록하고, 동적 집-나무-사람(K-HTP)그림검 사를 사용하였으며 상태-특성불안척도와 문화적응 스트레스 척도를 실시하였다. 연구결과는 집단미술치료가 북한이탈주민 자녀의 불안 및 문화적응 스트레스를 감소 시키는데 긍정적인 영향을 미친 것으로 나타났다.
