The purpose of this study is to examine the interrelationships between internal and external constraints, differential association with drug using individuals, and gender on adult offenders' drug use behaviors. Specifically, it aims to investigate if the effect of differential association with drug using individuals on drug use was moderated by internal and external constants; as well as the effect of differential association with drug using individuals and internal and external constraints related to drug use behaviors in similar ways across gender. The data used in this study was self-report data drawn from 1,471 adults offenders. The findings indicate that internal and external constraints moderate the effect of differential association with drug using individuals on drug using behaviors in somewhat different ways for male and female offenders. Yet, there are still more similarities than differences between males and females and social learning process that generate drug using behaviors. These findings suggest that here may be little need for gender-specific theories of delinquency and support the argument of a new middle-ground approach suggesting that the general process of offending is similar for males and females, but the way(s) in which the key indicate(s) are experienced by the genders vary in qualitatively distinct ways.

본 연구의 목적은 내적, 외적 통제요인들과 사회학습이론의 주요 독립변수인 차별적 접촉과 남녀 성인 범죄자들의 성별이 성인 범죄자들의 마약류의 사용에 상호간에 어떠한 영향을 미치고 있는지를 분석하기 위한 목적을 가지고 수행되었다. 보다 구체적으로 본 연구는 개인적 네트워크 내의 차별적 접촉의 영향과 내적, 외적 통제요인들의 역할이 남자와 여자의 성인 범죄자들에게 동일하게 작용하고 있는가를 분석하였다. 연구를 위하여 1,471명의 성인 남녀 범죄자의 표본이 사용되었다. 연구분석결과 마약을 사용하게 되는 일반적인 과정은 남녀의 성인 범죄자들 간에 큰 차이를 보이고 있지 않으나, 성별에 관한 중도적 입장을 보이고 있는 전통적 범죄학 이론의 하나인 사회학습이론에서 제시하고 있는 주요 변인인 차별적 접촉에 대한 경험은 남녀에 있어서 어느 정도 수준의 차이를 보이고 있다는 주장을 확인하였다. 그러나 차이점보다는 유사한 부분이 더 많다는 것을 확인하였다. 따라서 여성학에서 일반적으로 주장하고 있듯이, 여성의 범죄로의 여정을 이해하기 위한 특별한 범죄학이론의 창조 및 개발의 필요성 보다는 전통적인 일반적 범죄학이론으로도 남녀 성인 범죄자들의 범죄율의 차이나, 그들의 범죄 및 마약사용으로 이끌어간 메커니즘을 이해하는 데 부족하지 않다는 선행연구결과를 지지하고 있다
