It has been many years since I first pointed out that the commonly accepted view which regards Heo Gyun (1569-1618) as the author of Hong Gildong Jeon was a false. Yet reasonable discussions on this topic seem to have not been enough. Nowadays, many scholars of classic prose fiction consider that the story of Hong Gildong Jeon is far different from the original work of Heo Gyun. But it has not yet reached the stage of denying the authorship of Heo Gyun itself. What lies at the root of this theory is the idea that it would be favorable for the history of Korean literature to identify Heo Gyun as the author of the first prose fiction. The sole basis for regarding Heo Gyun as the author of Hong Gildong Jeon is the following quotation from the Taekdang-jip(Collected Writings of Taekdang) by Yi Sik (1584-1647): “Heo Gyun wrote Hong Gildong Jeon.’’ Yi Sik was a renowned writer and high-ranking government official at the time and his Taekdang-jip had been repeatedly published in late Joseon Dynasty. Along with the popularity of the Taekdang-jip, Heo Gyun’s fame played a certain role in spreading the aforesaid quotation. Ever since Kim Taejun identified Heo Gyun as the author of Hong Gildong Jeon in his ‘History of Joseon Prose Fiction’ (a serial on Dong-A Ilbo in 1930), scholars have regarded this as the earliest remark of the attribution. However, three years earlier, in 1927, Takahashi Toru, the professor of Keijo Imperial University already confirmed the attribution by citing the Taekdang-jip. Although the Taekdang-jip was a popularly read book throughout the latter period of Joseon Dynasty, there had been no explicit indication of the link between Heo Gyun and Hong Gildong Jeon before Takahashi. The significance of his remark lied in this fact. After 1927, more profound analyses were introduced by Takahashi’s pupils and researches on various aspects of Hong Gildong Jeon have continued until the present day. Hong Gildong Jeon is a typical popular prose fiction written in Korean script during the nineteenth century. It is highly likely that the author was not an intellectual or someone in power but a common man; and most probable that its readers belonged to the same class as the author. Considering these factors, the importance of Hong Gildong Jeon lies in the fact that the story was a reflection of the common people’s hopes and dreams of those days. It could be said that the yearning to create a glorious narrative of Korean literature led colonial scholars in the 1930s to link Hong Gildong Jeon and Heo Gyun. Such yearning carried a positive meaning to a certain extent but it is time for a change. It seems now that subsequent research on this work should give back the story to its original author and readers, i.e. the common people, and shed light on what these people actually desired and talked about.
