This paper introduces the collection of Joseon manuscripts and printed books housed in St. Petersburg State University and St. Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies by focusing on the collecting process, the total number of collected items, and some materials worth examining. The Joseon manuscripts and printed books are kept in various places in Russia, including Lomonosov Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies and the National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan. St. Petersburg State University and St. Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies hold the largest collection. St. Petersburg State University, an imperial university established during the Russian Empire, began teaching the Joseon language in the late 19th century with the intention of educating diplomats who were to be dispatched to Joseon. Teaching materials for the courses were purchased and sent to the university by diplomats already working in Joseon. St. Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies, a major research institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, purchased and stored Joseon books for the purpose of studying the characteristics of the Joseon language and literature. As a result, approximately one thousand books are currently kept in the institutes. Out of the 84 titles in 855 volumes housed in St. Petersburg State University, approximately 40 titles are worth examining; some of which include Gaegukobaekyeonpalweolsabeonbogoseo(a report originally written in Korean and then translated into Russian), Chonjamun, Jeonunokpyeon, Yuhap(materials used to teach the Joseon language), and classic novels, such as Tosangjeon and Samgukji(volume3). The collection in St. Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies (known to house 264 titles) is characterized by its many books dealing with the relationship between Joseon and Japan, as well as classic novels that were either kept or collected by Aston and Möllendorff. Many of such novels were purchased from book rental shops (sechaekjǒm) with the help of their Joseon language teachers. The Joseon manuscripts and printed books are housed around the world, yet St. Petersburg State University and St. Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies hold the most distinctive collections. The goal of this paper is to introduce the list of collected items before embarking on further research. It is hoped that by collaborating with Russia, the list would be supplemented and that modern translation, photo printing, and digitization of important materials and exclusive books would also become possible.

이 글은 러시아 상트페테르부르크 국립대학(St. Petersburg State University)과 동방학연구소(St. Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies)에 있는 조선전적에 대한 연구로, 전적들의 수집 과정, 총량, 연구할 가치가 높은 자료 등을 검토한 것이다. 러시아에 있는 조선전적은 모스크바 국립대학, 상트페테르부르크의 국립대학, 동방학연구소, 역사문화보관소, 카자흐스탄 국립도서관 등에 분산되어 있다. 이 중에서 가장 많은 자료를 소장하고 있는 곳이 상트페테르부르크 국립대학과 동방학연구소이다. 상트페테르부르크 국립대학은 제정(帝政) 러시아 때의 황제대학(皇帝大學)으로, 조선으로 파견할 외교관 양성을 목적으로 19세기 말부터 조선어(朝鮮語)를 가르쳤다. 이때, 교육에 필요한 자료를 이미 조선에 파견된 외교관들이 수시로 구매하여 이곳으로 보냈다. 그리고 동방학연구소는 러시아 학술아카데미의 주요 연구기관으로서, 조선어와 조선 문학의 특성을 연구할 목적으로 조선전적(朝鮮典籍)을 구매하여 소장하였다. 그 결과 현재 두 기관에는 대략 1,000책에 가까운 조선전적이 남아있다. 상트페테르부르크 국립대학에는 총 84종, 855책의 조선전적이 소장되어 있는데, 자료적 가치가 높은 것들은 대략 40여 종이다. 원래 한글로 작성된 것을 러시아어로 번역했던 󰡔개국오백사년팔월사변보고서󰡕, 조선어를 가르치기 위해 교재로 사용했던 󰡔천자문󰡕, 󰡔전운옥편󰡕, 󰡔유합󰡕, 고소설 󰡔토생전󰡕, 󰡔삼국지(권3)󰡕 등이 중요한 것들이다. 동방학연구소에는 총 264종이 확인되는데, 조선과 일본의 관계를 다룬 책이 많았고 애스톤(Aston)과 뮐렌도르프(Möllendorff)가 소장하고 있었거나 수집했던 고소설을 소장하고 있다는 점이 특징이다. 이 자료들 중에는 그들 조선어교사의 협조로 당시 세책점(貰冊店)에서 대여해주었던 세책본(貰冊本)을 구매한 것들이 많다. 현재 세계 여러 곳에 조선전적이 소장되어 있지만 가장 특색 있는 곳이 바로 러시아 상트페테르부르크 국립대학과 동방학연구소이다. 차후 러시아 측과의 협의를 통해 목록의 보완 작업, 중요 자료내지 유일본의 현대역 및 영인, 디지털 작업 등이 이루어질 수 있기를 기대한다.
