The purpose of the present paper is to introduce the format and characteristics of the cultural content of F. C. Ridel’s Grammaire Coréenne, this book being the first teaching material in Korean culture, and to examine the topics that appear in the teaching materials of Korean culture that have been written and published by Koreans in the 2000s, and study the relationship between the texts that cover the same topics. Korean language education has recently been expanding its field from simple language education to cultural education or language education through culture. Previously, cultural content composed only a small part in teaching materials for language education. Recently however, teaching materials wholly devoted to cultural content is starting to be developed. Since 2007, teaching materials with cultural content have started to be written and published by individual researchers. A more advanced discussion about cultural education has been started since 2008. It is not a recent realization that language education through culture promises greatest efficiency in foreign language education. The beginning of Korean language education conducted in Korea for foreigners is F. C. Ridel’s Grammaire Coréenne published in 1881. This book exerted great influence on various grammar books, including H. G. Underwood’s An Introduction to the Korean Spoken Language which was published in 1890. Ridel’s Grammaire Coréenne not only focuses on explaining Korean grammar, but adds a supplement at the end of the book where one can practice Korean according to one’s proficiency level. The presence of this supplement shows that this book was not only a grammar book, but also a reading material combined with cultural content.

본고는 역사적으로 한국 문화교재의 시초라고 볼 수 있는 리델의 󰡔한국어문법󰡕의 문화 부분을 따로 떼어내어 그 구성과 성격을 소개한 후, 2000년대에 들어와 한국인에 의해 집필, 발간된 문화교재들이 다루는 주제들을 검토하고 이 교재들이 공통으로 다룬 주제들을 추출, 동일 주제를 다루는 텍스트들 간의 관계를 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 최근 들어 한국어교육은 단순한 언어교육을 넘어 문화교육 혹은 문화를 통한 언어교육으로 확대되고 있다. 그러나 교재 개발의 측면에서 볼 때 문화 내용은 언어 교재 속에서 부분적으로만 취급될 뿐이고, 전적으로 문화만을 다루고 있는 교재가 개발된 것은 비교적 최근으로, 2007년부터 개인 연구자를 중심으로 문화교재가 집필․편찬되어 발간되기 시작하였다. 좀 더 본격적인 문화교육에 대한 논의는 2008년 이후부터 이루어졌다. 외국어교육에서 문화를 통한 언어교육이 가장 효율적인 교육을 담보한다는 사실은 비단 최근 들어서 인식되기 시작한 것은 아니다. 우리나라에서 행해진, 외국인을 대상으로 하는 한국어 교육의 시초는 리델의 󰡔한국어문법 Grammaire Coréenne󰡕(1881)이다. 이 책은 이후 언더우드의 한영문법(1890)을 비롯하여 여러 문법서에 막대한 영향을 끼쳤다. 이 책은 단순히 한국어 문법을 기술하는 데 그치지 않고, 책의 후반부에 부록을 싣고 이어서 단계별 한국어 연습에 해당하는 부분을 추가함으로써 문화교재를 겸한 강독교재로서의 성격을 겸하고 있다는 특징을 지니고 있다.
