Why the contents of culture are important to learn foreign language? Language is so intricately and intimately bound up with human life, and so familiar an experience. Nevertheless, it is one of the critical design features of language itself that it is at a remove from the actual reality of things. Its signs are arbitrary, and can therefore provide for abstraction: the languages of different communities will represent different variants of reality, so the explanation of experience is a matter of cultural custom and linguistic convention. In this sense, knowledge about linguaculture is necessary in Teaching Korean for Learners of Other Languages. In this view point, we think four factors for the contents of subject for Teaching Korean Language Culture: ⑴ knowledge: knowing about grammar and facts of Korean language as system and function as convention. ⑵ performance: ability to put knowledge to achieve meaning by putting linguistic competence as communication. ⑶ experience: familiarity and comprehension with actual reality of things as human life in Korean society. ⑷ attitude: evaluative readiness as responsible citizen through enough and justifiable materials and reasonable criteria.

외국어를 습득하는 데 문화가 왜 중요한가? 그 까닭은 자명하다. 언어는 삶과 매우 밀접하게 연관되어 있기는 해도 언어는 추상적 상징이자 기호이며, 그 약속은 그 사회의 관습에 따라 자의적으로 이루어진다. 따라서 언어는 그것이 상징 또는 지시하는 사실과 달리 추상적이며, 그 사회의 관습에 따라 사실을 이해하고 범주화하는 방식이 달라지게 마련이다. 따라서 자신의 생활언어가 아닌 외국어의 학습에서는 언어문화가 교수-학습의 내용으로 필수적이다. 이런 관점에서 언어문화교육의 내용을 다음 네 가지 요소로 정리할 수 있다. ⑴ 지식: 한국어의 체계와 기능에 관한 문법과 사실에 대한 앎. ⑵ 수행: 의사소통에서 언어에 관한 지식을 의미화할 수 있는 능력. ⑶ 경험: 한국 사회에서의 겪게 되는 실제적 삶의 방식에 대한 친숙과 이해. ⑷ 태도: 적절한 자료와 합당한 기준에 따라 책임 있는 시민으로서의 평가적 준비.
